Emma — Australian mum and founder of Emma's Sleep Advice
Hey there!

I'm Emma.

I'm an Australian mum who spent way too many nights googling "why won't my baby sleep?" at 3am. After testing dozens of products, reading the research (including Red Nose Australia's safe sleeping guidelines), and surviving two kids, I started Emma's Sleep Advice.

Common Baby Sleep Questions

Honest answers to the questions Australian parents Google at 3am.

How do I settle my newborn at night? +
Hold your baby in your arms and gently pat, rock, or stroke them while talking or singing softly. Once calm, place them in their cot on their back. Very young babies may need to fall asleep in your arms first — that's normal. Keep the room dim, quiet, and at a comfortable temperature. For more settling tips, check our newborn sleep guides.
How long should my baby sleep in my room? (Australian guidelines) +
Red Nose Australia recommends your baby sleeps in a cot in your room for the first 6-12 months — ideally the full first year. Room-sharing (not bed-sharing) reduces the risk of SIDS by up to 50%. Baby should always be on their back, on a firm flat mattress, with no pillows or toys. We have cot and bassinet recommendations coming soon.
How many hours should my newborn sleep? +
Newborns (0-3 months) need 14-17 hours of sleep in a 24-hour period, with wake windows of just 45-90 minutes. That means 5-6 naps a day. Don't let a newborn under 2 weeks sleep longer than 5 hours without a feed — they need the nutrition for healthy weight gain. Read our newborn sleep guide for detailed schedules.
How do I choose the safest baby mattress in Australia? +
All safe baby mattresses in Australia must meet the AS/NZS 8811.1:2013 firmness standard to reduce SIDS risk. Look for: a completely flat surface, no more than a 20mm gap on any side, and breathable materials. Our top-rated picks include the BabyRest DuoCore Bamboo, Airnest Cot Mattress, and Ecosa Cot Mattress — all tested and AU-certified. We have a full mattress comparison coming soon.
Is white noise safe for my baby? +
Yes — with the right precautions. Place the white noise machine as far from your baby's cot as possible, keep the volume low (no louder than a soft shower — about 50 decibels), and use it for settling only (under an hour at a time). Never put it in or attached to the cot. See our full white noise machine reviews with Red Nose Australia safety guidelines.
What temperature should my baby's room be in Australia? +
The ideal baby room temperature is 18-22°C. Australian summers can push well above that — if the room is warmer, dress your baby in light, loose clothing (a singlet and nappy is fine on hot nights), use breathable cotton or bamboo fabrics, and keep air circulating with a fan (not pointed directly at bub). Avoid overdressing — a hot baby is at higher risk of SIDS. For more tips, check our newborn sleep guides.
